The mountains of Monchique are worth a visit, as are the old Moorish towns of Silves, Sagres and Aljezur. Steer clear of the tourist blackspots around Albufeira and Praia do Rocha.  The beaches of Quinta do Lago, near Faro, are lovely, and the golf course is superb. Also, Faro is an interesting old city, as is the nearby country town of Loule (which has a good market).
